Seven of the biggest US tech companies—Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, xAI, Oracle and OpenAI—are heading to the White House on March 4 to sign Trump's "Ratepayer Protection Pledge," committing to cover their own data centre electricity costs. While some firms like Microsoft and Anthropic have already made similar promises, critics argue the voluntary agreement lacks legal teeth and won't meaningfully protect American consumers from rising energy bills.
